WEATHER ALERT: 'Coldest temps,' wind advisory, possible snow in forecast https://btb.nwlens.com/weather-alert-coldest-temps-wind-advisory-possible-snow-in-forecast/ Fri, 16 Feb 2018 21:09:55 +0000 http://b-townblog.com/?p=122840
The National Weather Service is forecasting for “the coldest temperatures of this winter,” and the possibility of snow starting this Saturday night, Feb. 17.
Meteorologist Cliff Mass adds:

“We are about to enter the coldest period in over a year (since December 2016 at least), with massive snow in the mountains and lowland snow in ‘favored’ areas such as Northwest Washington and the northern slopes of the Olympics. Even Seattle might get a dusting.”

In addition to wrapping your pipes, we encourage all to keep an eye on our Webcam page, as this is a much easy (and warmer) way to watch for changing weather and traffic conditions.

UPDATE: Trail section in Seahurst Park will remain closed due to recent slide https://btb.nwlens.com/update-trail-section-in-seahurst-park-will-remain-closed-due-to-recent-slide/ Mon, 05 Feb 2018 17:32:17 +0000 http://b-townblog.com/?p=122287 A short section of the trail along the shoreline in southern Seahurst Park will remain closed for several months due to the recent slide, the City announced on Monday, Feb. 5.
The slide has compromised several trees, and movement at the toe of the slide is still likely to occur.
Once things dry out (later this summer), the City will re-evaluate the conditions to determine if they can safely drop the compromised trees and reopen the trail.
The closed segment of trail can be bypassed by walking along the beach during low tides.

Small landslide has occurred at Seahurst Park, City says https://btb.nwlens.com/small-landslide-has-occurred-at-seahurst-park-city-says/ Wed, 31 Jan 2018 00:45:51 +0000 http://b-townblog.com/?p=122094
The City of Burien is reporting that a small landslide has occurred along the southern shoreline of Seahurst Park, just above the trail and beach.
As a precaution, the trail and beach south of the Seastar picnic shelter (graphic above) will be closed to the public until the hillside’s stability can be properly assessed. The closure limits will be marked with barricades and signage until a determination is made regarding public safety.
As a reminder, rainy weather brings increased risk for landslides. Learn how to spot a landslide! And if you see one in progress—get to safety and call 9-1-1.
Landslide Warning Signs:

  • Springs, seeps, or saturated ground in areas that have not typically been wet before.
  • New cracks or unusual bulges in the ground, street pavements or sidewalks.
  • Soil moving away from foundations.
  • Ancillary structures such as decks and patios tilting and/or moving relative to the main house.
  • Tilting or cracking of concrete floors and foundations.
  • Broken water lines and other underground utilities.
  • Leaning telephone poles, trees, retaining walls or fences.
  • Offset fence lines.
  • Sunken or down-dropped road beds.
  • Rapid increase in creek water levels, possibly accompanied by increased turbidity (soil content).
  • Sudden decrease in creek water levels though rain is still falling or just recently stopped.
  • Sticking doors and windows, and visible open spaces indicating jambs and frames out of plumb.
  • A faint rumbling sound that increases in volume is noticeable as the landslide nears.
  • Unusual sounds, such as trees cracking or boulders knocking together, might indicate moving debris.
