Tucked in a cozy storefront in Olde Burien is a small sanctuary for the carnivore in all (or at least many) of us – Burgers & Barley is a new addition to the city’s foodie scene where you will find premium Burgers, Beers and comfort food carefully prepared with attention to detail.
It’s here for the love of burgers, the love of beer and just, well…love, actually. That’s because the story of how a restaurant concept founded in Park City, Utah ended up with a branch in little ol’ Burien is really a story of re-connected love spanning three western states.
Owner Francesca Escalante has lived in Burien/Normandy Park for over a decade, having relocated from her native California. Many years ago in that sunny state she fell in love with a successful restauranteur,Allan Galeano, but alas the two parted amicably as they found that life was taking them in different directions. A few decades passed where the two moved on to greener pastures (he to Park City and she ultimately to – gasp…the Burien area). During that time they lost contact and lived life. It was only less than two years ago that Francesca and Allan (finding themselves single again) reconnected, thanks to the wonders of modern life and technology. It seems the embers of love had survived the years and were easily fanned back to full flame upon their reunion. There was just one hitch! He was still in Park City, where he had founded multiple restaurants of varying cuisines, possessing not just a mastery of burgers, but also ever popular Italian fare as well. It didn’t take long to realize that they needed to plan their next act. Why not open a Burgers & Barley right here in Burien and continue a relationship here in Washington and Utah whose first flashpoint was in California?
So there you have it! A heart warming origin story that brings lucky locals serious yummy in the tummy. But seriously, these burgers are de-lish. Thick and cooked to your desired done-ness, each distinctive recipe combines unique flavors and aromas to satisfy a variety of foodies. Thoughtful details abound, from the double B branded (yes they seared it with an actual branding iron!) artisan buns to the onion jam (you read that right- onion jam) on the Peppered Pig burger, the menu is full of unexpected treats.
